- Joint fracture
- Childhood joint disease

Procedure
The surgery may take a few hours and is performed in an outpatient surgery center or a hospital. During the procedure, the damaged bone and cartilage is removed from the joint and replaced with prosthetic components made of ceramic, plastic or metal. For instance, in an arthritic knee, the kneecap is moved aside and the damaged bone and cartilage is replaced with new metal and plastic parts, to restore the knee alignment and functioning.

Risks

- Fracture in healthy parts of the joint.
- Nerve injury
- Infection
- Blood clots in the joint veins or lungs.
- Dislocation or loosening of the prosthetics.

Results
Most patients may experience pain in the replaced joint because of inactivity of muscles for a long time, and the tissue healing process. But the pain generally subsides in a few months.
A patient is able to resume most routine activities (climbing stairs, light object lifting, walking etc.) within 3 to 6 weeks following the surgery. But it’s possible only with right recovery methods and precautions. Heavy-impact activities like jumping, jogging, sports etc. must be avoided and performed only on doctor’s advice. Patients can expect their joint replacement to last for about 15 years, depending on patient care. The joint replacement surgery thereby offers an improved quality of life with reduced pain, better strength and restored movement.
